Intelligent Insurer speaks to Ian-Edward Stafrace, Risk Analyst & International Business Development at Atlas Insurance PCC, about the benefits of using protected cell companies.

The Captive Practice of Willis Group Holdings, the global insurance broker, and Atlas Insurance PCC (Protected Cell Company), the Malta-based insurer, have become the first in the insurance industry to use PCC technology to underwrite UK statutory motor liability from Malta.

Atlas Insurance PCC Ltd’s risk analyst, Ian-Edward Stafrace, was invited to make a presentation at the 12th Annual Risk Management Congress in London on the opportunities of setting up protected cells in Malta.

The Congress was a practitioner based event, featuring over 20 leading risk managers from the UK, Europe and beyond. The Risk Congress addressed all the current challenges and new risks facing today's Risk Manager. It covered various themes including enterprise risk management, emerging risks, governance, strategy, risk culture and risk financing.

Atlas Insurance has managed to license three cells within two years, a fourth is in the offing and others are in the pipeline, according to managing director Michael Gatt.

In collaboration with British Insurance Brokers Association (Biba) and with the support of the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA), Atlas Insurance has held an afternoon seminar at Lloyds Building in London with the theme Protected Cells - When Size Does Not Matter.
